what to name our gal | a call for help

no seriously. i'm asking for help.

our poor turtle didn't get named until we were minutes away from the hospital the morning of her delivery.

i think we all saw how well that turned out...we call her turtle.

turtle, for god's sake.

my farmer had the idea of turning it over to all you super wonderful blog gals (and of course my three wonderful friends who read September FARM religiously):

if you had, have, want, are thinking about, considering having a baby...and if that baby just happened to be a girl...what names do/did you have picked out?

i know us gals aren't in the habit of spilling our favorite ideas for fear of someone stealing that one precious name - so maybe you could help a girlfriend out and give me your second, third, and fourth choices?

and then, just maybe, if we name our gal the name you suggest...my farmer and i would absolutely love you forever. we would also expect you to send our gal a birthday present every year. i kid.

but seriously, comment your name idea. tweet me your name idea. facebook me your name idea. whichever avenue you choose...i'll be one grateful gal. and farmer and i will probably roll our eyes at each other a lot less.

(you don't even want to know what kind of names he's coming up with.)

  1. I like traditional names and my family tends to use family names so I may not be much help. I like to sit down and talk to people in my family and get them to tell me the whole names of family members going back as far as they can remember. We named our son Hanan. It was his great grandmother's maiden name.

  2. Chesney is a favorite. Maybe Chesney Luanne. I've also always loved Sidalee (from divine secrets of the yaya sisterhood), or even Vivianne, Prounounced as two words Vivi Anne

  3. We have Ella, Morgan, and Kate picked out for girls. We also love more traditional names - Katherine, Elise, Isabelle. And you can never go wrong with a Mc name. McKenzie, McKenley, McKenna. :) Good luck!!

    Finnlay
    Sophia

  6. As a teacher of 10 years, I can honestly say the best advice I can give for names is to name your kid without a wacky spelling! EX SKOUT (should read scout) or Vayden instead of Jayden. Nothing is more aggravating than getting kids that have a name spelled one way and PERNOUNCED another....IE the name Leighton looks like and should techincally be pronounced LEIGH- then TEN but it's mostly said LAY-then Ten. Big no no considering half those vowels are not suppose to be sounded out like that! LOL Just my two cents. I'd hop on baby names. com and check out what is the most popular names right now and steer clear of those names since by the time your kid makes its way to Kinder those are going to be the duplicate names in their class. :) good luck!

    1. Here's another list showing the current "popular" names (based on births) that might should be avoided:

  7. Charlotte is a fave of mine too - because I love that you could call her Charlie. So cute! Also love Blanche, Paige, Hadley, Everly, Evelyn (Evie)...I think you can see that I am totally into classics right now.

  8. Here are some girl names for you! I have loved all of these for a while! And would not care one bit if you "stole my name" (so preposterous to think that you can claim a name!):

    Nora (Eleanor)
    Corinne (our personal favorite!)
    Amelia
    Emerie
    Rosalynn

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

    1. Aww, our daughter's name is Roslynne - close to Rosalynn! If we were going to have a girl, it would've been: Cybil.

  9. Aubrey
    Taylor
Kyle (like the boy name...NOT a weird spelling of Kylee)
    Norah
    Sam (Samantha)

  10. I have a name picked out for my future (possibly non-existent) daughter, and I chose it from family names (which I found out about because I enjoy doing genealogy research). Are there any names from either of your family trees that stick out? It would have a special meaning that way.

Some names from my family tree that I like (but not the ones I wanna use, cause I'm not sharing those) are the following:
    Alma
    Eugenia
    Mable
    Myra
    Evelyn
    Cora
    Hazel
    Gladys
    Iris
    Eva
    Eliza

  11. I'll tell you my favorite girl names :) Even if you 'steal' them I would still use one of them haha!

I love Andee, Riley, Isla, Eleanore (Ellie) and Sloane

  12. These are a few that I absolutely love, but the future hubby isn't a huge fan of. Good luck!!!
    Leighton
    Meredith
    Gray
    Ella

+ I have four little sisters who's names are ...
    Courtney
    Aspen
    Savannah
    Addison (Addi)

  13. My top name is Charlotte with the nickname Charlie. I also love Emery or Emerson, Quinn, Lilah (or Lila or Lula or Tula - all favorites) and Dori.

Whatever you choose will be beautiful and I absolutely love the nickname turtle :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love the names Bennett, Addison, and Joe Ann (my grandmother's original name, which she changed to Joanne because it "wasn't feminine enough", but I happen to love it). As one of FIVE Jessicas growing up in my class, I love less mainstream names :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Our little girl is Greta. Some other names we considered Norah, Lena & Maeve. Are you wanting it to have some significance? Try finding alternate names for grandparents like for example Greta means Pearl which was my grandmothers middle name - same meaning different name. I feel like for having Kaye, you like simple names - so maybe Ella, Emma, or Ava.

  16. We are having our first in September and we had a problem coming up with a name for our girl! Boy name was done and decided before we even were married.... girl name; far from picked out!

    Anne
    Greta

  19. I have two sisters and all our names begin with J and I quite like that so to keep with the theme I'd choose Kellie, Kasey, Karis, or Kyla...although you might not want to go down the Kardashian route!

My personal favourite names are Lottie, Darcy, Carmen, Violet and Wendy :)

I can't wait to see what you choose!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, since you asked.. If I ever had a little girl I would name her either Adalyn or Adalind. I don't know why but I am stuck on those two names, but am not sure which sounds better ha ha!

    ReplyDelete
  21. How can someone claim a name?!? That's so silly but I understand what you mean. Good luck!! :)

Some names I love if I ever have a little lady....
Emma Louise (my #1; after my sweet great grandmother)
    Emery
    Ellison
    Caroline
    Cora
    Taylor (family name)

I have a friend that named her girl Charlie and I think that's precious too. I'm a big fan of nicknames!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Girls names are hard! I really like Mason and Carson. My daughters name is Jordyn, although the spelling is feminine, I like names that can go for either a girl or boy. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Charlotte, Anniston, Rowan. I'm done with babies so you can steal the ones I loved but didn't use!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rori is a favorite of ours :) Our short list for girls also includes Luca (LuLu) and Elise.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If my son had been a girl we were going to use the name Kaylee. It was a girl's name we decided on years and years ago and then we found out we were having a boy and had trouble finding a boy's name! We're probably in the one and done camp so I don't think we'll ever get to use our girl's name, so I'm happy to suggest it to someone else!

    ReplyDelete
  26. we have a willow kate + meadow grace + had haven james picked out for the newest baby (who happens to be a boy named sutton smith :))

a few "normal" names i like are:
    charlie
    kennedy
    fenley

    xo

  27. I try to stay away from any names that are "trending" (aka, Sophia, Ava, Charlotte, etc) because then there will be three of them in her class as she grows up! That said, I had Henry picked out for nine years before I got to use it, and wouldn't you flippin' know, it's now projected to be a top 10 name for 2014. Boo!

I do have a super cute girl name picked out, but I'm planning on using it in the next few years here ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love more traditional names. And steal away, I can still use it ;)

    Bridget
    Charlotte
    Emily
    Hannah
    Harper
    Naomi
    Natalie
    Olivia
    Penelope

  30. Our top picks were Aspen and Mackenzie. I like:
    Kennedy
Emerson (I like boy names for girls)
    Molly
    Lilly
My fiance is in charge of picking out the next name, if we have another. I'm terrified!! lol. Good luck!

  31. We're also having a girl who is due in October and we're naming her Stella Elizabeth. Other names on my list were Emma, Elizabeth, Emily, and Hazel.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If Jack would have been a girl her name would have been Elliot and we probably would have called her Ellie. We also liked Cora and Clara as other possible names.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love Amelia, love love love, it is such a pretty name (so are Emma and Olivia, but everyone and their mother are naming their girls that)

    Natalia

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lena, Anna, Tessa, Jovie :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. We have two daughters, Molly and Lucy... I love both names! Some of our other runners up were Grace, Julia, Raylene and Claire. Can't wait to hear /see the name you choose!

    ReplyDelete
  38. So many to choose from but I'd say top are: Caroline, Evelyn, Hannah, and Claire

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well we are pregnant with our 3rd boy and honestly have had a girls name locked and loaded since our first pregnancy that is just not being used (by us). I was also a teacher and I also love strong names for girls because I just think they are amazing and nothing is cuter than a girl who is sweet as pie but strong like her name to stick up for herself (what every girl mom and dad would want, I'd think!) ;) So without further adieu:

    Collins (our fave)
    Dylan
    Blake
    Lyla
    Sawyer

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nicole (Nikki / Nik) for short. Pretty and traditional yet not that common anymore ;)

    Or..
    Abigail (Abby)
    Alexa (Lexi)
    Corin
    Isla
    Kressi (goes cute with Kaye)

    Have fun!

  41. My best friend growing up was named Kaytlin and I have loved that name every since. My first born girl will be named Rae Allyn. Allyn (Alan) is a family name that along with the other family names (so many Mexican family names to add on) works out well. My future hubs- if I find one- will just have to deal because I'm already set on it. He can name a boy ;)

Even if you "steal" it, it'll be a good 5-10 years before I use it so go right on ahead! haha

    ReplyDelete
  42. Obviously we love Abigail, and it's special to me because it's from my grandfather's name (Abe). Do you have anything like that in your family?

    Other ones we like:
    Hannah
    Claire
    Charlotte
    Leah
    Emily
    Ella
    Evelyn
    Charlotte

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Growing up with the most common name in the history of the world (Emily) I have always liked the thought of unique names, and will probably give my child one...nothing too crazy of course though! ;)

    Penelope
    Marin (mehr-in)
    Malin (may-lin)
    Stella
    Fiona
    Ailsa (ale-sah)
    Isla (ee-slah)

    :)

  44. Guess I'll jump on the bandwagon and say Charlotte is my all-time fav with Charleigh as a nickname. Looks like my future baby girl will share K-5 with 18 other Charleighs but that's ok. Other favs are: Elise, Chloe, Analeigh, Heidi, and Everly.

    1. Charlie is our (hopefully future) girl's name too. I didn't realize how popular it was until I was reading everyone's name suggestions!!

  45. A few I love and can part with are: Olivia Paige, Coralie (Core-a-lee) and Hailey. I personally think Tiara (T-air-a) is a pretty awesome name too ;)

    Best of luck!

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's funny, even thought I knew EXACTLY what I'd name my baby girl, I still made a list of alternate names just in case. This was my list from 8 years ago--before certain franchises made/wrecked certain names....so bear with me.

    - Isobel or Isabella
    - Rosalie
    - Aria
    - Freya/Freja
    - Beatrice (I wanted to be able to call her Bee!)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I really like (and my husband has already vetoed for our future children): Olivia (Liv), Charlotte (Charlie!) and Jordan (Jo)... I think I like nicknames?! I love the nickname Max (and he actually does too) but I don't like Maxine or Maxwell... so if you get any Max names please send them my way :) (not that I'm pregnant but hopefully one day!)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Here is my baby girl list{currently unapproved by the hubs so they are 100% up for grabs}

    Elizabeth/Betsy/Elsie
    Charlotte
    Grace
    Hazel
    Maeve
    Mabel
    Maggie
    Bridget
    Sloane

Girl names are super hard! Little girl #1 is Abigail :)

  49. Bella ... cause you could call her Bella Boo
    Amani
    Chloe

  50. This post is stressing me out

  51. Go for a family name! I have never, ever, ever in my life met someone with my name. It's a last name on my dad's side of the family so I have some family members with it as a last name, but no one with it as a first. I hated it growing up but I absolutely love it now and plan on using only family names for any future kids. Good luck!

  52. Here are my favorites that Erik rejected but could perhaps work for your gal!

    Mila
    Stella
    Leila
    Ruby
    Sydney
    Emma
    Emilia

    ReplyDelete
  53. Charley. Avery. Brookelynn. Faith. Jessica. Grace. Elle. Hannah. Finley. Addisyn.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love the names Leighton and Eden. My husband has already shot those down (if this one's a girl), so feel free to use away. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lillie
    Avery
    Norah
    Sophie
    Stella
    Violet
    Lyla

    ReplyDelete
  56. Our daughter's name is Finley Sophia. Our runner up names were Sophia Hope (but then her initials would have been SHT... so that was out...) and Sophia Marie. I think if we were to have a 2nd little girl we would use a family name, most likely Nelly. It was my husband's grandmother's name. I also love the southern feel of LilaMae :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh I love me some baby names, I have boys & their names came to us immediately even though we never found out what we were having, girls names have always been a struggle. My favorites are:
    Lochlan
    Selene
Helena (my fav and a shout out to MT where my husband went to school in Bozeman)
    Maeve
    Jolene

I wish I was better at lil gals names, turtletwo has a great ring to it... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think Turtle is sweet! We only make boys so our one and only girl name was Rory Elizabeth...Rory means irish princess and I always wanted a curly red head girl! Emma kathryn, Ruby, or Hannah are good too. Good luck

  59. Kayla, Isabelle, Hannah (timeless)

  60. Weird, my addendum showed up, but my original comment did not. Let's wee what I remember:

    Jane
    Clara
    Natalie
    Katie (Kate)
    Allie
    Ellen (Ellie)
    Charlotte (Charlie)
    Leanne

  61. Piper & Brooke are definitely two of my favorites. Piper is fun & different while Brooke seems to be timeless & sweet. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Faye and Nora and my favorites:) good luck!!!

  63. I have a friend with the same last name as you who just had her 3rd daughter a few weeks ago. Her favorite name suggestions were:

Elle, Ella, Belle, Bella, Isabel, Kel(ly), Mel(inda), Mel(issa), and any other name or nickname that rhymes with Bell. And then there's Clara, Southern, Liberty, Tinker,...or Taco.

According to my friend, your potential for funny name combinations are endless with a last name like Bell ;) I'm sure you've heard these before, but I just couldn't resist. ;)

I'm sure you'll find the perfect name for your beautiful little one!

  64. There are some awesome names being listed here, wow! I like:
Isla, Layla-Lin, Milla, Kaylee and Isabella.
Emma and Amy are lovely classics too

    ReplyDelete
  65. We named our son Sawyer - he was going to be Sawyer whether he was a girl or a boy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've had some favorite girl names for years--one of my friends already named her little girl one of my favorite girl names...but that's totally fine with me, we can definitely have little girls with twin names at some point. My favorites are Shiloh and Ariel--because they're actually very old names of ancient cities...but they don't sound old, and they're cool.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I keep a list of names in the notepad app on my phone so I can easily write names down when I hear them. I really like Zoey, Peyton, Brooke, and Riley :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Stick with K names. I love K names. My SIL and I ended up prego at the same time - she had a baby girl and I'm getting my THIRD boy. Which I am totally stoked about but I really wanted to use my girl name! Maybe the world just didn't need ANOTHER amazing Karli. Yes, that was to be out girls name. My husbands middle name is Karl and it was his dream to name his little cutie pie after him; but we're getting a Kamden instead :) Anyway, back to my suggestion... My SIL named her cutie pie Kora and I thought that was just absolutely adorable. I think Kaye and Kora just sounds right.

  69. Cali, Jaci, Cameron, Juliana. Looks like you have a lot of great ideas to choose from (-:

    ReplyDelete
  70. Well, since we're expecting a little boy, I suppose there's no harm in sharing some of my favorite girl names :) I'm a big fan of umm...vintage (aka: old lady) names: Sylvia, Matilda, Vera (my grandma's name).

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well of course I love MY name, which is Ericka...spelled different, which I love (thanks mom). But if I have a little girl, I am going to name her Aubrey. I'm so glad my husband agrees, because I've had it picked out for years! Good luck with the name :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. I've been told I have odd taste in names so take these with a grain of salt. :)

    Tallulah Spring (my current favorite)
Zellie or Zephyr (an old name in my husband's family)
    Olive
Charlie (my grandmother's name was Charlene but everyone called her Charlie, I named my son after her)

And, of course, my all time favorite AND my daughter's name:
    Maggie Isolda Ray
    Isolda is pronounced (eye-ZOL-da)

    ReplyDelete
  73. My favorite girl names: Chandler and Caris (also spelled Carys)
Which happen to be the names of my girls:-)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I love Sydney and Lauren for girls names. I'm that keen on weird names, spelled in odd ways. I think that when you are an adult it is cool, but it may make it hard during adolescence. I am also kind of interested in the older type 70's names that no one has now…Audrey, Maureen, Margaret, Karen, Marlo, Marcy, Jenny, Kelly…these were my besties in elementary school (sorry) but no kids have these names now.

  79. I love Charlotte and Loralei

    ReplyDelete
  80. I hope you find a great name (if you haven't already chosen one)! I love Josephine, Kaileigh, Mackenzie, Eloise, and Sabrina. Also, a good nick name for baby #2 would be "Bunny"... then you'd have your very own version of the tortoise and the hare :) Best of luck!!
